Comrade Isu Chiba represents qualities in his life that we can use as a model for all of us today. We ask and answer this because we all need to learn lessons from the lives of people like Comrade Chiba in order to make a meaningful contribution to building one. Even as we unravel what Isu's qualities may have been, many of these qualities emerged under circumstances that no longer exist: armed struggle and capture, torture and detention.
We have to find out what it is that characterized Comrade Isu, and then each of us must ask ourselves whether we accept these qualities and values, and if we believe that these are important, we must continue to apply these values in our own lives. . I would like to ask how we can draw on Comrade Chiba's life to guide us in what we do, and how we can do it in a way that affirms others, that builds others' trust, that does not hurt others, but creates friendships and mutual respect. We need more people like that and we need us to be individuals that others can trust.
