With only a single month of this year’s autumn remaining before the onset of winter, Rustenburg’s lovely
Michelle Smith didn’t hesitate to proverbially
lose herself in the joys and colours of
just about everyone’s favourite month. In 30 days
from now, the last green and orange would have faded from numerous hedgerows of trees with
dry brown leaves telling us not to forget the jackets and jerseys on
the way out. The SA Weather Service has predicted a cold winter for this year after probably one
of the very best rainfall seasons of the past decade.
This photograph was taken in Unie Street, Rustenburg where dozens of plane-trees are a familiar sight.

“Alone we can do so little but together we can do so much”
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security. This necessitates the right to a standard of living that is sufficient for the health and well-being of every citizen. The success of a town begins when communities and the people thrive.
The private welfare organizations in South Africa are in a major crisis and are falling apart. Offices are closing, people are out of work and the people in need no longer know where to get help. The welfare organizations play a significant role in protecting the defenseless with few tools at their disposal (Persons with Disabilities, the elderly, children, families, the youth)
and they are only a small handful of people. People who have to keep society healthy. Volunteering in such organizations therefore enables you to help different sectors of society. If you want to be part of a movement that promotes positive change, this is just the thing for you. What we ask: Your support, your involvement and your prayers. Together we can create a community where health and well-being is a priority for everyone. Act now. Time has never been so important. Look forward to meeting you on 5 May (8:00 - 13:00 ) at Laerskool Rustenburg or Waterfall Mall (Entrance 2).

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - “In every town/city there is a community. In every community there are residents. In every community there are at least one or more non-governmental welfare organizations.
Facebook ‘advertiser’
another scam
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - It has become more of the norm than the exception that adverts on social media are likely a scam.
The number of people falling victim to fake adverts on Facebook is rising to such an extent that Police in the province have issued a warning.
“We are urging members of the community to exercise caution when responding to online advertisements as criminals are coming up with new tricks to scam people,” said Brigadier Sabata
Mokgwabone, provincial Police Spokesperson.
In one of the latest incidents reported, a man saw an advertisement for a Toyota Quantum for sale on Facebook. He made contact with the seller who gave the assurance that he is the lawful owner.
A meeting was arranged in a township outside of Wolmaransstad.
The prospective buyer took the vehicle for a test drive and a sales agreement was subsequently reached. The victim drove with the
“owner” to collect the necessary documents and in the process, they allegedly offered hitchhikers a lift. However, these hitchhikers then robbed the buyer of his cell phone and forced him out of the vehicle.
“Please be vigilant of social media and online advertisements. Should you become
suspicious, contact the nearest police station. Buy only from reputable and registered car dealers and do not carry large amounts of cash, nor pay money in cash during transactions. Rather opt for an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT),” warned Brig Mokgwabone.
SASSA payments now rolled out by Postbank
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - The DA cautiously welcomes Postbank’s new payment system to assist the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant beneficiaries who have been struggling to renew their SASSA cards and access their funds.
Postbank’s new system that will allow grant recipients to withdraw funds at participating retailers with their identity documents, cellphones and SASSA card pin numbers, comes after sustained pressure from the DA and civil society to address the crisis and a nationwide outcry.
The DA will be monitoring the payment of grants through this system closely. Every month we are inundated with complaints and pleas from desperate grant beneficiaries that are unable to access their grants due to one or the other failure from SASSA and the South African Post Office (SAPO)/
Postbank as its implementing agent. We will
submit parliamentary questions to determine the procedures and processes SASSA and Postbank put in place to ensure that beneficiaries can successfully access their grants through the new payment system, as well as the measures taken to safeguard it against fraud and
corruption.
It is high time that SASSA fulfilled its mandate and ensured the smooth payment of social grants. The perpetual rise in the cost of living has
dire consequences for the poorest and most vulnerable in our country. They cannot continue to pay the price for SASSA and Postbank’s ineptitude. Given SAPO’s liquidation, it is time for SASSA to put plans and processes in place to insource the payment of social grants.
Social grant recipients deserve better than this poor excuse of an Agency that continually fails them.
15 years for robber-cop
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - A police captain convicted of robbery and kidnapping was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Bafokeng Regional Court in Tlhabane on Tuesday (18 April).
Steve “Chippa” Molatedi was found guilty in September 2022 for robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping.
Molatedi’s sentencing emanated from an incident in which he and his accomplice robbed a foreign national owned business in March 2018. Evidence indicated that Molatedi held a shop owner at gunpoint and robbed him of cash and other valuables. The incident took place near a well-known hotel between Phokeng and Ledig. During the incident the victim was locked and left in a chalet.
The policeman, then aged 56, was arrested 17 days later. He has been in custody since his detention after all his bail attempts were denied, while his accomplice was found not guilty and discharged.
On welcoming the sentence, the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena said that criminality will not be tolerated within the ranks of the South African Police Service (SAPS). He thanked the Investigating Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Murunwa and the Prosecutor, Zola Mpayipheli and other role players for securing the sentence which he said will send a clear message that crime does not pay.
Meanwhile, the Director for Public Prosecution, Advocate (Dr) Rachel Makhari-Sekhaolelo, said that the sentence clearly indicates that collaborations of entities in
line with the resolution of the conference held in August last year, are bearing fruits and that no stone will be left unturned to ensure that offenders are convicted.
Burglar
targeting CBD sentenced
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - A prolific burglar has been sentenced by the Rustenburg Magistrate Court last week.
Nicolas Tiego Khule was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment after being found guilty on seven counts of business burglary.
Khule was arrested in 2021 after a spade of burglaries reported in the CBD.
Detective Warrant Officer Molete was successful in opposing numerous bail attempts by Khule and he has been in custody ever since.
During his incarceration it was again established that Khule was on parole after he was sentenced for business burglary previously By the time he was sentenced this time around, he was already serving time for contravention of the previous parole conditions.

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Last week, the Police in the Bojanala Platinum District Sub 2 held a successful Community Policing Forum (CPF) Annual General Meeting.
The meeting took place on Thursday (20 April) at Tlhabane community hall.
From 2019, the board was led by an interim structure after the then Chairperson resigned and a proper CPF Board election couldn’t be held due to Covid-19 and other challenges.
The proceedings were led by the CPF Provincial Board chairperson, Mr Ngamlane and the CPF Provincial Board Secretary, Mr Mosweu assisted by Captain Maatla ( Provincial Partnership Policing and awareness) and Mr Letlape (Acting CPF Crime Prevention Director- Department of Community Safety and Transport).

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services, Rustenburg Local Municipality - Public Safety, and the Royal Bafokeng Administration were also in attendance.

elected as follows:

Reward for info about cop
killing
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG – A year after a retired policeman was fatally shot in a street in Mogwase, his killers are still on the loose.
Police are now offering a reward of up to R100 000 for any information which can lead to the arrest of the murders of the 53-year- old retired Warrant Officer, Johannes Butiki Shaba.
Shaba was attacked and fatally shot by four men at about 20:30 on 2 May 2022.
The incident happened in Unit 5, Mogwase.
The retired policeman was accompanying his 57-year-old friend who went to see one of his tenants. Shaba remained in the vehicle, a Toyota Hilux Legend 50 bakkie while his friend went to speak to the tenant.
Upon returning to his vehicle, the friend was confronted by a suspect, who demanded the keys to the bakkie. The suspect then started to assault Shaba’s friend and Shaba got out of the vehicle to come to his friend’s aid.
In the mean time, three other men, accomplices of the attacker, arrived on the scene. Shaba was shot twice by the suspects, who then fled the scene in the hijacked bakkie.
During the incident, a 9mm Norinco pistol and cellular phone were also robbed. Shaba was hospitalised, where he succumbed to his injuries the same night.
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned at Thekwane, close to Rustenburg.
Anyone with information is requested to contact the Investigating Officer, Captain Lesego Mosimane of the Mogwase Detectives on 082 416 3083. Anonymous tip- offs can be communicated via the MySAPS App from your smart phone or call the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Tavern robberies:
Patrons shot
RUSTENBURG HERALD - PHOKENG - The Police here are investigating incidents of business robbery and attempted murder.
This follows after three different taverns in Rasimone and two in Phokeng became targets of armed robbers the past weekend.
The first incident happened in Rasimone on Saturday morning around 00:30. “Two armed suspects got out of a white Audi sedan with unknown registration plates. They held the owner and tavern patrons at gunpoint,”
Rustenburg Police Spokesperson, Sgt Ofentse Mokgadi said.
The owner tried to fight them off, but, according to Sgt Mokgadi, one of the suspects fired a shot into the air in order to force him to cooperate with them. All the patrons were ordered to lie down and they were searched. Cellphones and money were taken from them.
The suspects then escorted the cashier to the office and took all the cash, bottles of whiskies before they drove away in a vehicle belonging to the tavern owner. This vehicle was later recovered in Mafenya. Two more incidents, the same modus operandi as the one in Rasimone, happened on Saturday evening around 22:30 at Kgale section and early Sunday morning around 1am at Pitso section. The difference was that some five suspects took part, in stead of two. The five armed men were also more reckless, shooting randomly at anyone, injuring five patrons in the process. The victims were all taken to hospital and are said to be in serious, but stable conditions.
The police are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the incidents, or have any information relating to the robberies to please contact Detective Captain Montsho on 0768343531 or Phokeng SAPS on 0145661879.
Family desperate for information
The family of Christiaan Wright is pleading with anyone who has information about his possible whereabouts to please come forward. Christiaan was last seen at around 10:00 on Friday morning (21 April).
According to family, he parked his bakkie at the Obara service station in Lucas Street, left the keys of the vehicle with an employee and then rode off on his bicycle, possibly in the direction of Northam. Since his disappearance, his phone has been switched off and he has made no contact with any of his family. “We are all very worried. He is not the type of person who will leave and not tell his wife,” a family member told Rustenburg Herald. Christiaan (40) has brown hair and green eyes. He has a tattoo of praying hands and a dove on his left arm. If you have any information, please call Christiaan’s wife on 082 776 3925 or the Lyttleton SAPS on 012 644 8633 (Case number 05/04/2023) CCTV footage of Christiaan Wright presumably

SABC News calls
“home” about Kgetlengrivier
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - The existence of an official notice apparently placed by the Municipal Demarcation Board in the Daily Sun of 8 March 2023 and wherein it became clear that not all is what it should be pertaining to public participation, has unknowingly released the proverbial cat in the pigeon loft.
This after journalists of SABC News suddenly began to call well-known Rustenburg whistle blower - Frans Rootman - after it became clear that the MDB seems to be playing dirty.
Rootman was prompted by SABC journalists on the issue of the incorporation of small town municipalities such as Kgetlengrivier (Koster, Derby and Swartruggens) as well as Madibeng (Brits, Hartbeespoort and Mooinooi) with the Rustenburg Local Municipality and what the future may hold if the MDB gets its way.
“I reject these proposals with contempt.
Firstly, I think the Speaker of RLM mislead the MDB by creating the impression that his
“draft proposal” has been approved by the RLM Council when he submitted his proposal on the letterhead of the Office of the Speaker and signing it as “the Speaker of Council”.
This is indeed misleading, as Council never deliberated on this matter before he submitted the draft proposal on 31 March 2022, just more than a year ago. He demonstrated that he does not know the difference between his office as Speaker and his personal views and should in my humble view be immediately dismissed by Council. He singlehandedly proved that he is unfit to be the Speaker of the Rustenburg Local Municipality Council”, Rootman told SABC News.
Secondly, I have been told that the Council did not approve the amalgamation to form a Metro as averred by the Speaker in an article published by SABC News. At best, Council decided to appoint a Section 79 Committee to investigate and report back on the matter.
I have to applaud the local FF+ Councillors for raising the mandate of the Speaker in Council. Whether we like it or not, they were correct!
Lastly: I strongly reject the proposals published by the MDB regarding amalgamations and/or inclusion of certain areas in the boundaries of Rustenburg Local Municipality, inter alia because RLM does not have the financial viability nor administrative or operational capacity to perform municipal functions in the proposed new areas in an effective and efficient manner. “The RLM cannot even fix potholes or streetlights in Rustenburg. How will they do it in Koster?
RLM do not even properly collect outstanding debtors in Hartbeesfontein, how will they do it in Ledig close to Sun City?” he said.
to anyone who might have witnessed the incident or have any information to come forward,” said Sgt Mokgadi. If you can assist the police in the investigation, call the investigating officer, D/Sgt Jerry Setlhalogile on 076 777 4165 or the Tlhabane SAPS on 014 565 9154.

Four arrested for possession of Eskom cables
RUSTENBURG HERALD - KOSTER - Four suspects were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen copper cable over the weekend.
Police acted on a tipoff on Sunday (23 April) and arrested the four.
“It is alleged that Eric Mathebetlha (42), Itumeleng Sebokolodi (39), Mlandeni Mlatha (36) and Shadrack Mokotedi (31) were all traveling in a white Ford bakkie on the R52 from Lichtenburg towards Koster,”
Sgt Ofentse Mokgadi, Police spokesperson said.
Police spotted them and stopped the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, 1000 meter Eskom Fox aluminum worth nearly R100 000 was discovered on the back of the bakkie. Police also found 70 meter conductor cable worth about R21 000.
“They could not provide any documentation of where they bought the cable and also could not provide a reason for transporting it,” Sgt Mokgadi said.
The Police then contacted an inspector from Eskom who identified the cables as Eskom property.
The four suspects appeared before the Koster Magistrates court on Monday (24 April) on a charge of possession of suspected stolen copper cables and were all remanded in custody until Thursday (4 May).
The acting Bojanala Platinum District Sub 2 Commissioner, Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae praised and congratulated the Police for their prompt and swift response. She also thanked the community for providing the Police with information.

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Could a future Olympic Javelin champion come from Rustenburg?
Letlhogonolo Solly (29) believe that he just might be that man.
“While I was studying, I took part in a college athletics competition. I did very well. I
later qualified for a national college athletics competition and I won the u21 Javelin,”
recounts Letlhogonolo. Establishing his career and settling into a work routine have
gnarled into the years, but now Letlhogonolo would like to pursue his athletic dreams again. “I believe I have much to offer and would love to get into the athletics circle again,” says Letlhogonolo.
He would very much like to improve on his personal best - 69m.

Celebrating World Book Day
RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - On Friday Rustenburg Library East-End celebrated World Book Day (Sunday 23 April) by inviting the community to come and have a look inside the library and to learn about books and copyright.
Libraries will use any opportunity to cultivate, and encourage a love for reading and books.
“Books give flight to our imagination and makes the ordinary a magical experience. They inform, enlighten, enthral and help us understand and live our history and culture. World Book Day celebrated all of this and encouraged everyone to embrace all that books do. Also known as World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April is a symbolic date in world literature as it’s the date on which several prominent authors – William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega – all died.
This made the date the choice for the UNESCO general conference in 1995 to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors, encouraging as many people as possible to access books and share ideas.
“It is our duty as adults to encourage a love for reading and there is no better way than to lead by example. A passion for reading starts with hearing stories being told.
We cannot expect our children to enjoy reading when parents and other adults do not set them on a book journey. It is never too early to start reading to a child and to give them the lifelong gift of a love of books”.

“menu” for 29 April will be the usual wide range of fresh produce, food, baked goods, hand crafted goods, livestock, music, a cash bar, and much more. The Farmers Market is a lovely shopping outing in a friendly environment with lots of friendly faces and new friends to meet or skills to learn.
Stalls for the market are available at only R100 each and can be booked with Tracy on [email protected].
Time for Farmers Market again
Interested parties are also welcome to phone 072 580 1076 or 078 397 1397. Why not look out for the Farmers Market’s Facebook page - Farmer Production Support Unit?
